Smithtown Police Blotter: Man Faces Grand Larceny Charge In Scam

The man collected money for a residence he had no legal right to rent, police say. ALSO: Person stabbed at mall, police say.

SMITHTOWN, NY — Curious about what's going on in your neighborhood? These are recent incidents reported in the Smithtown area from Dec. 30 through Jan. 5.

The Suffolk County Police Department posted the following information. All charges are accusations and do not signify guilt.

  • Jan. 4: Darwin Diazcalix, 26, of Riverhead, deceived someone into sending money via an online transfer, police said. The person sent Diazcalix money to rent a place on Farmstead Road in Commack, but Diazcalix had no right to rent the residence, police said. He was arrested and charged with third-degree grand larceny (property value exceeds $3,000).

Incidents

  • Dec. 30: Assault with intent, causing serious injury with weapon, was reported on Webster Avenue in Smithtown at 11:30 a.m. Someone was stabbed at the food court in Smith Haven Mall on Nov. 23, police said.
