Smithtown Student Wins Art Award: 'Reading Is Good For Your brain'
The Great Hollow MS student is one of 12 state winners in a contest that asked "Why is reading important to your health and wellness?"
SMITHTOWN, NY — Vivian Santiago, a sixth grade student at Great Hollow Middle School, was one of 12 winners statewide in a new contest that challenged children to express their thoughts on why literacy is critical to health and wellness, the Smithtown School District announced.
The inaugural Every Child Reads Student Awards, coordinated by the New York State PTA, received 55 submissions from K-12 students. It asked participants to create a poster, video or essay in response to the question "Why is reading important to your health and wellness?"
Vivian, who has won several art awards, said her motivation for the contest was her younger brother.
