William Schreck, Oldest Living FDNY Firefighter, Dies At 104

The retired FDNY firefighter died last week.

SMITHTOWN, NY — William Schreck, a Smithtown resident who was the oldest living retired FDNY firefighter, died at 104 on Thursday, Oct. 17.

Schreck was born Aug. 23, 1915, according to Branch Funeral Homes.

Schreck spent his entire FDNY career at Engine Company 218 in Brooklyn and retired in 1960 after serving 20 years, the NY Daily News reported.

Firefighters at the Hart Avenue firehouse, referred to as the "Bushwick Bomberos," considered Schreck their "senior man" and surprised him with a special lunch when he turned 100 in 2015, according to the NY Daily News.

Funeral services for Schreck were held Monday morning at Branch Funeral Home of Miller Place, and he was laid to rest at Calverton National Cemetery, according to the funeral home.
