Shower and thunderstorms are expected across Long Island Saturday but, the NWS says, the weekend "certainly is not a washout."

LONG ISLAND, NY — Labor Day weekend could be off to a less-than-stellar start, according to the National Weather Service.

Dominic Ramunni, meteorologist with the NWS office in Upton, said the first part of the holiday weekend is "looking a little unsettled," with showers and thunderstorms likely Saturday into Saturday night.

"Folks who are heading outdoors should keep an umbrella handy," he said. "It's not going to be the best beach weather."

With clouds and showers forecast, Saturday will "not be the best day overall," Ramunni said.

Sunday could still bring the chance of some rain as a frontal system moves through the area, especially early in the day, he said. But, Sunday evening, conditions are expected to begin to dry out, Ramunni said. Although a "rogue shower" can't be ruled out, "Monday is will be the best of the three days," he added.

Temperatures all weekend will hit the high 80s, normal for late August and early September — unlike last year, when Long Island was seeing temps in the 90s, Ramunni said. Lows are expected to drop into the mid-60s.

Despite the less than sunny forecast, Ramunni said: "This is certainly not a washout. It won't be raining continuously. And, while there is a chance of rain Saturday night into Sunday, the silver lining is that conditions are expected to improve by the holiday."
