SHINNECOCK HILLS, NY — Suffolk County Legislator Ann Welker teamed up with members of the Southampton Trails Preservation Society recently for a trail clean-up effort along a section of the Paumanok Path in Shinnecock Hills.

Earlier in January, Welker worked alongside STPS members Tim Corwin, Dai Dayton, Eric Woodward, Liz Karpin, and Tim Ferguson, as well as additional volunteers, to remove multiple blockages caused by downed pine trees, branches, and invasive vines, she said.

In total, 15 volunteers participated in the afternoon cleanup, restoring safe and accessible passage along the trail, Welker said.

"The effects of the Southern Pine Beetle have significantly impacted trails throughout the East End, leaving fallen trees, branches and debris that pose hazards to trail users. Ongoing maintenance is critically important so that our natural environment can be safely enjoyed by the public," Welker said. "Access to our trails and the safety of our residents and visitors are a top priority."

Welker thanked the Southampton Trails Preservation Society and volunteers for their commitment to preserving local trails and ensuring continued public access. "Our office looks forward to continuing this partnership in joining future cleanup efforts by the STPS," Welker added.

"Southampton Trails Preservation Society would like to thank Legislator Welker and her staff for volunteering to clear one of our trails. The open spaces and public trails in Southampton are treasured by many, and we hope in the future this trail and others will be respected," said Dai Dayton, STPS secretary.

"I am very, very pleased to see all the volunteers who showed up from the STPS and Legislator Welker’s office," said Tim Corwin, who is in charge of maintenance for STPS

Local business owner, Jon Ford of Hampton Watersports, also participated in the trail cleanup. He reflected, "I walk that section of the Paumanok Path to get to and from work, helps to keep me healthy, stay in nature, and lets me leave my car behind."
