Mark Your Calendar: October Events at the Southampton Historical Museum
Which event will you attend?

Southampton Town's History runs deep and the Southampton Historical Museum has planned a number of programs in October that bring that history to life. Among the programs are ghost hunting, canning, and witchcraft stories.Â
So, grab your calendar and mark the following events:Â
Talking History: “Growing up in the 50’s – Four Classmates Reminisce,Â
- Location:Â Rogers Mansion, 17 Meeting House Lane
- Dates: October 3, 11:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
- Fee: Free Admission, Donations Appreciated
- Program Description:Â Join us at the Southampton Historical Museum for a return visit with four local residents who attended Southampton High School in the 1950's. They will talk about their families, neighborhoods and lives in the era of black and white TV's, Potato Queens, and rock n' roll. Then we'll serve soup, cider and cookies. Space is limited and reservations are required. Please call the Southampton Historical Museum at 283-2494 to register.
Fiesta Latina!
- Location:Â Rogers Mansion, 17 Meeting House Lane
- Date: October 5: 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.
- Fee: Free Admission, Donations Appreciated
- Program Description: An afternoon of family fun, including games, food and music - all with a Latin theme. No advance registration required.
Canning Pear Ginger Butter

- Date: October 10;Â 6:30 p.m.
- Fee: $35 Members, $45Â Non-Members (includes supplies)
- Program Description: Seasoned as well as new canners will love this delightful alternative to traditional apple butter.  The museum will can a batch as a group and have some jars to take home as well. Deborah Lukasik will be instructing. Class size is limited to 12 students. Call the Museum at 631-283-2494 to register.
Ghost Hunting at a Lost Indian Fort and Seaport
- Location:Â Conscience Point Historic Marker and Nature Walk,
- Date: October 12 at 4:00 p.m.
- Fee:Â $18 per person, bring outdoor clothing, limited to 20 adults
- Program Description: North Sea Harbor has been home to Native American culture for 10,000 years and English pioneers since1640. Migratory People arrived after the glaciers receded establishing fishing camps; a friendly Shinnecock Sachem was recorded living in an Indian fort in 1639; and by 1650 North Sea was a lively shipping port with a tavern, two warehouses, a customs house and a cluster of farmhouses all of which have disappeared. The program takes place at Conscience Point Historic Marker and Nature Walk, a property of the Southampton Historical Museum, and is located near the end of North Sea Road just past the Marina. - Program Description:Â Antiques, furniture, jewelry, vintage clothing, glass, ceramics, artwork, and a variety of collectables will be sold inside and on the lawn of the White House, 159 Main St. in Village.Â
- Location:Â Halsey House, 249 South Main Street
- Date: October 19 at 4:00 PM
- Fee:Â $18 per person, bring outdoor clothing, limited to 20 adults
- Program Description: Halsey House was built in 1666 by Thomas Halsey, Jr. on the homestead of his father who established a farm in 1648. It was home to generations of the Halsey family. Before the English arrived the land was used as a planting field by the Shinnecock Tribe. Call 631 283-2494 to register.
Goody Garlick: The Story of an East Hampton Woman Accused of Witchcraft
- Location: Rogers Mansion, 17 Meeting House Lane
- Date: October 24;Â 11:00 AM
- Fee:Â Donations at the door
- Program Description: In1657, Elizabeth Howell, the daughter of East Hampton's most prominent citizen Lion Gardiner, died screaming she was killed by a witch. What happened to the only person on Eastern Long Island to be accused of witchcraft, thirty-five years before the Salem witchcraft crisis! Find out at a lecture given by Loretta Orion, Ph.D. and Hugh R. King, Director of Home Sweet Home Museum who are writing a book about the case titled, "Just Suspicions, Register by calling 283-2494.
Jewelry Making Classes with Eric Messin
- Location:Â Pelletreau Silver Shop, 80 Main Street, Southampton
- Dates: Fridays beginning October 25: 6 to 8 pm. or Saturdays beginning October 26: 10:00 a.m. – noon
- Fee: $365 members, $385 non-members
- Program Description:Â Students will learn the basics of jewelry making, from sculpting wax and soldering to setting stones and polishing, over an eight-week course. Master Jeweler, Eric Messin will take you step by step to create a piece of jewelry that will be finished and ready to be worn. Call 283-2494 to enroll.
Ghost Hunting at a Whaling Captain’s House
- Location:Â Rogers Mansion, 17 Meeting House Lane
- Date:Â October 26 at 4:00 PM
- Fee:Â $18 per person, bring outdoor clothing, limited to 20 adults
- Program Description:Â In 1648 the Rogers family established a farm at this location with their heirs living in the home until 1889. A decade later Samuel Parrish spent his summers in the mansion until he died in a car crash in 1932. The seventeen room mansion was the home of whaling Captain Albert Rogers. Come Make A Fall Craft
- Location:Â Rogers Mansion, 17 Meeting House Lane
- Date: October 26 at 11:00 a.m. to noonÂ
- Fee: $5 Children Ages 7-12
- Program Description: Create a festive craft celebrating fall. Call the Museum at 631-283-2494 to register.Â
