'Reckless Discharge' Of Handgun Leads To Hamptons Arrest: Police

He injured his own hand during the incident, police say.

WATER MILL, NY — A Southampton man was arrested after putting others in danger when he fired off his gun while trying to unload and secure it — and injured his own hand, police said.

According to Southampton Town police, the incident took place on September 14 at about 10 a.m. A call came in about a person with a gunshot wound at Stony Brook Southampton Hospital, police said.

The Southampton Town Police Department's detective division responded and began an investigation, which revealed that the person injured in the shooting, Alfred Callahan III, 37, recklessly discharged his firearm, injuring his hand, police said.

Callahan possessed the legally-owned handgun and, while unloading the weapon to secure it, he did so in an unsafe manner, in proximity to other individuals, police said.

Callahan was in a moving vehicle in Water Mill while he was attempting to unload the weapon and
secure it; the weapon discharged a bullet, which struck Callahan in his hand, traveled through his
hand, and lodged in the wallet located in the pocket of a passenger in the vehicle, police said.

The passenger sustained a minor injury, police said.

Callahan was arrested Wednesday and charged with second-degree reckless endangerment, a misdemeanor, police said. He was arrested on Wednesday, processed, and released for a later court date, police said.
