Swimmer Drowns At Sagaponack Beach: Police

The 73-year-old from Switzerland, who had been reported missing after he'd gone swimming, was found on the beach and later died, police say.

SAGAPONACK, NY — A man, 73, from Switzerland drowned at a Sagaponack beach earlier this month, police said.

According to Southampton Town police, on October 4 at about 3:30 p.m., an abandoned 911 call came in from the vicinity of Gibson Lane in Sagaponack. Dispatchers were able to re-contact the caller, who reported a man was missing in the water after going swimming at Gibson Beach, police said.

Southampton Town police patrol officers, marine units, detectives, the Bridgehampton Fire Department and EMS responded to the area to search for the missing swimmer, police said.

The swimmer, Robert De Vos Burchart, was located unresponsive on the beach a short time later; CPR was started and he was transported by Bridgehampton Fire Department EMS to Stony Brook Southampton Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased, police said.
