Here are the top stories today in Sunset Park:
- State Senator Zellnor Myrie, who represents Sunset Park and Crown Heights, stood outside of an intersection filled with fast food chains yesterday dressed as a carrot to announce his new bill targeting predatory fast food advertising to children. It calls upon the Department of Health to work with local school boards to promote healthier food options. (Brooklyn Paper)
- A Black Lives Matter mural at P.S. 295 and M.S. 443 in South Slope, which draws a large amount of students from Sunset Park, was taken down after community members protested that it didn't accurately represent the community's true diversity. The majority of students in Sunset Park – and in attendance at the school – are Hispanic and Asian American. The grant was made possible through a grant secured by Councilman Menchaca. (Paywall: The New York Times) (Free version: NY1)
- Check out this interview with the two candidates running for City Council in Sunset Park's district 38. Alexa Avilés is a Democratic Socialist, while her challenger, Erik Frankel, is running on the Libertarian and Conservative party tickets. Avilés had previously faced off against Frankel in the Democratic primary, which she secured. (Brooklyn Paper)
- There was still concern with compliance by City Workers as the vaccine mandate took effect at 5 p.m. on Friday. The exact numbers of those still unvaccinated wasn't known at press time. (NYC Patch)
