Highway Patrol Officer Struck In Nassau DWI Crash: Police

He tried to offer money to officers in exchange for his release, police say.

EAST HILLS, NY — A highway patrol officer was hit early Monday morning in a Nassau DWI crash, police said.

According to Nassau County police, officials were responding to an unrelated 911 call and were in the vicinity of eastbound exit 38 on the Long Island Expressway. While they were responding in a marked police car, a highway patrol officer was hit by a 2024 black Audi, police said.

Police said the driver, Chi Hung Leung, 50, of Brooklyn, tried to flee in his car, then on foot, and was located nearby by officers.

According to police, Chi Hung Leung tried to offer money in exchange for his release during the arrest. Both the officer and Chi Hung Leung were taken to nearby hospitals, police said.

Leung was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated, leaving the scene of an incident resulting in injury, two counts of third-degree unlawful fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle, and three counts of second-degree bribery, police said. He will be arraigned today in Hempstead.
