Local VFW Makes Push To Connect With Displaced Members

"The recruitment pool has really diminished," Syosset VFW Post 6394 Commander Mitch Furman says.

SYOSSET, NY — The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) is always ready to welcome new members. However, the Syosset post is looking to fill the void following the closure of the Hicksville VFW.

It's even more vital to reestablish contact with former members, because "there aren't that many people joining the military anymore," said Syosset WFW Post 6394 Commander Mitch Furman. "The recruitment pool has really diminished. Years ago, in my generation, there was a draft and we were at war."

Furman, who served in the Vietnam War until he was wounded, said the dropoff for those serving in the armed forces is also clear within certain communities.

"There are certain towns where more people go to college and start a career," he said.

This is not the first time Furman watched a local VFW shrink. While a member of the Oyster Bay VFW, the membership decreased so much that "we couldn't sustain the post." Members merged with the Syosset post.

It's similar to what happened in Hicksville, but this time there was no merger.

"Unfortunately, nobody in my post was aware of it, at the time, enough to jump on it and try to grab those members," Furman told Patch. "Now we're trying to play catch-up."

Furman is hoping the "Hicksville campaign" will net results by reuniting with displaced VFW members at the Syosset post.

"We would like you to come to a meeting," Furman said. "See what we're all about."

Despite eliminating the Hicksville post, Furman said Syosset's VFW is thriving.

"The last two years we've actually increased membership," he said.

With a membership of approximately 75-100, Furman said they are active in the community by visiting schools and participating in street fairs. You'll also find them taking part in special events for Flag Day and Veterans Day.

Former members, or veterans looking to join, can call the Syosset post at (516) 921-7956.

Eligibility requirements include an honorable discharge. Veterans needed to have served in a combat zone or been awarded certain military medals.
