South Woods Middle School Fights Against Hunger

Students, staff collect more than 850 pounds of food to aid Mercy First organization's Thanksgiving drive.

Students and staff of South Woods Middle School in Syosset participated in the school’s annual Thanksgiving food drive throughout the month of November to benefit Mercy First. The South Woods community wound up collecting and donating more than 850 pounds of food for the cause.

Mercy First is a local organization that inspires hope and promotes healing for children and families by providing quality human services and educational opportunities while also advocating for social change. The food drive was organized by the school’s student council organizations, representing every grade level, in conjunction with the school’s Triple A Club. Each homeroom class was asked to contribute a portion of a traditional Thanksgiving dinner, such as stuffing, canned vegetables or gravy.

Last month, South Woods Middle School also held a walkathon and canned food drive to benefit the Rock CAN Roll hunger relief organization.
