Every October, for two days, programmers, entrepreneurs, scientists, designers, storytellers, makers, builders, artists and technologists from around the world come together for a global hack marathon. Participants in the NASA International Space Applications Challenge created in-person and virtual teams to solve challenges using open source data from NASA and its space agency partners.

This year’s space agency partners include the Australian Space Agency, the Brazilian Space Agency, the Canadian Space Agency, the European Space Agency, the Indian Space Research Organization, the Italian Space Agency, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, the Mexican Space Agency, the Argentine National Council for Space Activities, the National Space agencies Bahrain Science Agency, Paraguay Space Agency, South African National Space Agency and Turkish Space Agency.

The first Space Apps in 2012 had around 2,000 attendees and 25 events in 17 countries. Since then, the program has grown rapidly in number, breadth, and depth.

These statistics reached new heights during the 2020 pandemic, with the addition of the Space Apps COVID-19 Challenge to the annual Space Apps Hackathon, which ultimately saw more than 40,000 participants and more than 250 "local virtual "Activities are delivered by local leaders in 87 countries!

In its early years, Space Apps was primarily focused on space science and technology. However, in 2017, Space Apps moved to NASA's Earth Science Division and expanded to include Earth and space science and technology. Today, Space Apps juxtaposes arts and humanities challenges with technology challenges to create a program that is more inclusive, has broader appeal, has the highest participation ever, and has seen a significant increase in submissions in technology and arts themes.

The Space Applications Challenge owes much of its growth and success to its local leaders. Without them, this event would not be possible! Local leaders organize in-person or virtual local events for specific cities/towns or groups in an effort to increase local awareness and participation in the Space Applications Challenge. Local leaders are creating incredible results in their communities.
