West Nile Virus infections most often cause mild or moderate flu-like illnesses, but they can be more serious.
WHITE PLAINS, NY — The first human case of West Nile Virus in Westchester County has been confirmed by health officials.
The case was confirmed in an Elmsford resident who had multiple underlying medical conditions and is recovering at home.
"This first case of West Nile Virus should remind us all to take precautions against mosquito bites by removing standing water from our property," said Health Commissioner Sherlita Amler, M.D., "especially after recent heavy rain and flooding, and using repellents when we spend time outdoors, especially from dusk to dawn, when mosquitoes are most active."
