Greenburgh Asks NYS To OK 2 Red Light Camera Installations

The supervisor said the town wants to encourage motorists to drive safely.

GREENBURGH, NY — The town of Greenburgh is asking the state to approve its request for a couple of red light cameras on its roads.

The Greenburgh Town Board voted in favor of a resolution at its Tuesday meeting requesting the state Legislature give the town permission to install red light cameras at the intersections of Ardsley and Old Army roads.

Supervisor Paul Feiner said the town is also pushing for a camera at the intersection of East Hartsdale Avenue and Rockledge Road.

He said this is the most recent safety initiative the town wants to put in place.

“We want to encourage motorists to drive safely and to comply with the Vehicle and Traffic laws,” Feiner said.

The state has allowed red light cameras in many cities across the state but not in towns, he said.

“That is why a home rule request is required,” Feiner said. “The town cannot install red light cameras without permission.”

The Traffic and Safety Unit of the Greenburgh Police Department studied accident statistics of town roads and concluded that the two intersections “have instances of red light related traffic accidents which may be positively impacted by the installation of red light cameras,” according to the resolution.
