Jif Recalls Peanut Butter Because Of Salmonella: What To Know In NY

NEW YORK — Dozens of Jif peanut butter products sold nationwide have been voluntarily recalled by the J. M. Smucker Co. because of potential contamination from salmonella.

People in 12 states, including New York, have reported falling ill after consuming the product, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said. To date, 14 cases of illness from salmonella have been reported, with two people hospitalized. There have been no deaths linked to the recall.

States with reported cases, besides New York, include Arkansas, Georgia, Illinois, Massachusetts, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, Texas, Virginia and Washington.

The J. M. Smucker Co. said the recalled products were distributed in retail stores and other outlets throughout the country. The recall includes creamy, crunchy and natural varieties of Jif peanut butter, along with many others, including twin packs and squeezable pouches.

Salmonella is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or older people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.

In rare circumstances, infection with salmonella can result in more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.

What To Know

The FDA is investigating a multistate outbreak of salmonella Senftenberg infections linked to Jif peanut butter products made at the J.M. Smucker Company facility in Lexington, Kentucky.

Recalled products include the products below with lot codes with the first four numbers between 1274 and 2140, followed by 425 after the first four numbers. Lot codes are included alongside the best-if-used-by date.

The FDA recommends that if you have used the recalled Jif brand peanut butter marked with those lot code numbers, you should wash and sanitize surfaces and utensils that could have touched the peanut butter. If you or someone in your household ate this peanut butter and have symptoms of salmonellosis, contact your healthcare provider.

If consumers have products matching the recalled jars, they should dispose of them immediately, the company said.
