Sleepy Hollow's 150th Anniversary Continues With Ice Skating, Stories

An ice skating rink will be erected in the Village Hall parking lot on Beekman Avenue.

SLEEPY HOLLOW, NY — The village of Sleepy Hollow is continuing its celebration of its 150th anniversary with storytelling and ice skating Saturday.

An ice skating rink will be erected in the Village Hall parking lot on Beekman Avenue, officials said. Ice stakes are free to skaters, or people can bring their own.

“Please join us as we reflect on our shared past,” said Mayor Martin Rutyna, “ so that we can work more closely together for a better future.”

Storytelling will begin at 4:30 p.m. Children will be entertained by readers organized by the Sleepy Hollow Bookshop with tales that include stories featuring the village.

Ice skating will begin at 5 p.m. and end at 8 p.m.

There will be food trucks on hand, officials said.

The rain date for the event is from 1:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

With the support of the Historical Society of Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown and a sub-committee of the 150th Anniversary Planning Committee 150 facts about Sleepy Hollow that will be released throughout the commemorative year.

In the years after the New York State passed a law allowing for the Incorporation of villages on April 20, 1870, many communities in Westchester County began to vote for Incorporation. In 1874, with a vote of 304 for and 92 against, the residents voted to incorporate as the Village of North Tarrytown and on March 16, 1875, the new village residents elected Josiah F. Kendall to serve as the first Village President. The village changed its name to Sleepy Hollow by referendum in 1996.
