Crimes Nearby: Alleged Stalker Arrested; Trio of Burglaries Investigated

The following arrest information was supplied by the Suffolk County Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

COMMACK

Suffolk County police arrested a man accused of stalking a Commack High School student, the school district announced Friday.

According to district officials, a high school student reported to a security guard that a man was standing by her car in the parking lot on May 9. The student told the security guard that she was familiar with man and that he had bothered her in the past. The security guard asked the man to leave the property, which he did, school officials said. The girl’s family later filed a complaint with police. Police said the man returned to the school the next day and was seen in the hallway walking among students.

Dayo Chou, 31, of Northport, was arrested on May 10 on charges related to stalking in the fourth degree. Chou was also charged with trespassing and criminal possession of a controlled substance in the seventh degree for carrying prescription drugs that police said were not prescribed to him.

The school district printed the following statement on its website after the initial incident May 9: “The District’s main concern is the safety of our students and in conjunction with our security personnel and other staff, we will continue to do everything in our power to assure student and staff safety at all times. Should you encounter any suspicious persons on school grounds, or anyplace else, please contact the police immediately.”

MT. SINAI

Police are investigating three separate recent burglaries on Granada Circle in Mt. Sinai. In one case, on May 10, someone broke into a house through the rear basement window between 8:10 a.m. and 5:15 p.m. and stole video game consoles and games. On May 9, a burglar entered the home possibly through a doggie door on the side of the house between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. and stole an iPad and jewelry. On May 6, a homeowner found a rear bedroom window was unlocked with a rip in the screen, and reported that jewelry and electronics were missing.

SMITHTOWN

Cynthia Schreiber, 22, of Smithtown, was arrested and charged with third-degree felony drug possession after police said she had crack cocaine on her when she was in a car on Rt. 112 in Medford on May 8.  Police did not say that Schreiber was the driver. Schreiber was also arrested and charged with seventh-degree heroin possession, which is a misdemeanor.

Police are investigating a May 10 car fire on Old Willets Path in Smithtown as an arson. A 2009 Nissan Altima was set ablaze at around 8 p.m., police said. The Smithtown Fire Department extinguished the blaze. Police impounded the car.
