Letter: Arrowhead Lane Too Full of Potholes and Patches

Here's why one local resident feels Brookhaven town should repave Arrowhead Lane north of Route 347.

To the Editor:

I am writing to complain about the potholes – and the existing patches – on Arrowhead Lane in East Setauket.

The street is split into two portions by Route 347, and I am writing about the poor condition of the northern part of the Arrowhead Lane that exists between Old Town Road and Arrowhead Elementary School.

There is a lot of school traffic using Arrowhead Lane. Every weekday dozens of large school buses, teachers' cars and parent cars drive back and forth. In addition, because the neighborhood itself is a cul de sac, almost every resident of the neighborhood also uses this road to get to their homes every day. As a result, this portion of Arrowhead Lane is in a continual state of disrepair.

Potholes are periodically filled in. A week ago, the potholes were quickly filled in once again, resulting in piles of loose asphalt (tarred pebbles) rolling around the street. In a few weeks, the existing potholes will reappear as they always do, and new potholes will develop again before they are covered over.

We have lived in our home on Mayflower Lane for over 10 years. The roads in the area have not been repaved once.

As long as the town of Brookhaven only patches potholes on Arrowhead Lane, the condition of the road will continue to worsen.  It is not unlike the portion of Stony Brook Road pictured in this article currently on view at http://threevillage.patch.com/topics/Potholes ["LOOK: How Bad Are Three Village's Roads?"].

Arrowhead Lane must be completely repaved, just like both Upper and Lower Sheep Pasture were completely repaved over the last year. The side streets should also be repaved at the same time, since the equipment will already be in the area.

Sincerely,
Emil Wisekal
