Here are the top 5 stories in Three Village today:

  1. A new statewide mask mandate took effect Monday amid concerns about the omicron variant. Gov. Kathy Hochul announced last week that she's reimplementing the requirement that everyone, including employees, wear masks in public places that don't require proof of full vaccination. The governor said her decision was based on mounting concerns over New York's weekly COVID-19 case rate and the increasing numbers of hospitalizations. Hochul says individual businesses can decide if they want to have a mask or vaccine requirement. (Newsbreak)
  2. Authorities say a woman is facing a DWI charge after she crashed into a Suffolk patrol car with an officer inside in Port Jefferson Station. Police say just after midnight, Janet Marlowe was intoxicated when she was driving a Honda Civic northbound on Route 112 near Sagamore Hill Drive. Officers say she crashed her car into a parked patrol car, causing the Civic to flip on its side. The patrol car had its emergency lights flashing and there was an officer sitting inside. The officer was taken to the hospital and treated for minor injuries. Marlowe was arrested and charged with DWI. (newsbreak)
  3. Woodhull Elementary School students are utilizing the technological resources at their fingertips to enhance their educational experiences and forge deeper connections with their peers. Third graders, who have been studying Japan, had the opportunity to take a Zoom call with 35-year resident of Japan and former New Yorker Mr. Christopher Silverstein. During the call, the students asked prepared questions and listened intently as Mr. Silverstein described aspects of life and culture in Japan, including the climate, geography, customs, music and food. The morning Zoom, which took place at night for Mr. Silverstein in his Tokyo suburb, was a delightful learning experience for all. (Three Village School District)
  4. For over 40 years, the Three Village Historical Society has ushered the holiday season in to the Three Village community with the Candlelight House Tour and, we’re so happy to have been able to celebrate this time honored tradition with you! This year, the tour "Along the Brook" took place entirely in Stony Brook and we welcomed guests to tour 4 homes, expertly decorated by local designers along with 3 additional public buildings. 5. The Stony Brook Fire Department's Christmas Parade is set for Dec. 18. It will run from about 4:30- 8:30 p.m. Residents living on dead ends and cul-de-sacs were advised to view the parade from the nearest corner. "Listen for our sirens and look for our lights," officials wrote in a recent Facebook post. Candy canes will not be distributed this year, nor will firefighters be accepting gifts. (Patch)
