- Setauket Elementary School sixth grader Lily Tamburo dazzled a national television audience this December as she performed in NBC’s musical production “Annie Live!” Taking a hiatus from her role in the Broadway musical “Mrs. Doubtfire,” Lily performed as part of the ensemble that brought the beloved story to life. - A Long Island family is searching for answers after their loved one died shortly after being released from South Shore University Hospital. The family of Carol Waldron says the Shirley woman died not long after being brought home Tuesday following heart surgery at the hospital. According to the hospital, Waldron was discharged in good condition after a successful surgery, and the private ambulance company that handles non-emergency patients took her home. Waldron's son, Michael Murphy, says he was then asked to help his mother climb the stairs when she immediately started saying she couldn't breathe. "The medical personnel there, they were just kind of standing there while no one was responding and Michael had to respond giving CPR to his own mother and then had to say, 'Can you please help me? Can you please help save my mother,' her son said, then he called 911. (News12)
- For the North Fork crowd, there’s nothing quite like Insatiable Eats Creative Kitchen, the new venture by caterer and restaurateur Chef Marco Barrila and wife Sheila, opening this week in Riverhead. Between the authentic Sicilian pizza, the coffee bar featuring imported beans from Barrila’s hometown of Messina, the gourmet marketplace with imported panettone, the chocolate and other fine foods and a buffet of hot Italian dishes, Insatiable Eats Creative Kitchen is an Italian food lover’s dream. The village has announced that in March it will host its first St. Patrick’s Day parade with former Congressman Peter King as grand marshal. (Newsday) - Some smaller eating establishments may soon be able serve alcohol in the Town of Huntington. The town board is considering amending its definition of food shop to make such establishments eligible to serve alcohol for on-site consumption. Currently food shop establishments are banned from such service under town zoning code. The change would make town code consistent with state law, which allows "food shops" to serve alcohol. - A Fire Island student recently helped local felines in need by sewing 100 catnip toys.
Olivia Asaro-Apsley, a sixth-grader at Woodhull Elementary School in Ocean Beach, created the 8-inch toys over the course of about two months using items including tie-dyed fabric, cotton and a sewing machine. She then donated the colorful playthings to John Debacker, a local animal rescuer and animal rights advocate. (Newsday)
