Ward Melville Students Shine at Long Island Youth Summit

Approximately 300 students from all over Long Island attended the Long Island Youth Summit earlier this month, where they participated in workshops across a wide range of important topics and prepared projects to enter for competition.

Among the topics addressed were environmental issues such as water protection, open space preservation and renewable energy; socio-medical issues such as bullying, cyberbullying, and poverty and health; and community issues such as economic development, race, class, education and economy and the impact of Hurricane Sandy.

Ward Melville High School had two winners in the category of "Impact of Hurricane Sandy." Eric Hu and Eric Zhang, guided by their teacher Allison Kane, wrote one of two winning essays in this category.

“We had a very productive day where the current generation of leaders worked with the future generation of leaders,” said Dr. Nathalia Rogers, co-chair of the Long Island Youth Summit Steering Committee and director of the American Communities Institute at Dowling College. “The purpose of the summit is to work with the brightest high school students to further their analytical and leadership abilities for the benefit of Long Island’s future."
