Awning Disaster Reported at Upper East Side Eatery

Radicchio's awning crashed down onto 3rd Avenue on a rainy November evening, officials say.

UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — Disaster struck early Wednesday evening at a relatively mediocre Italian-food restaurant on the Upper East Side, when the awning attached to the front of the restaurant crashed onto the street below.

A spokesman for the Fire Department of the City of New York (FDNY) said firefighters rushed to the Radicchio restaurant at 1664 3rd Ave., across from the Duane Reade between East 93rd and East 94th streets, just after 7 p.m.

When they arrived, emergency responders found that a "canopy" had fallen from the five-story building, the spokesman said. It took them a little over an hour to "close out" the case, he said.

"It fell down, but everything is OK," an employee at the restaurant told Patch over the phone around 8:15 p.m.

"A special company, they came here, and they're about to take it away," the employee said.
