Crumbling Facade Rains Rubble Onto UES Sidewalk
Debris fell from the East 81st Street building's facade on Sunday, prompting a city inspection.

UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — Owners of an Upper East Side apartment building are facing city Department of Buildings violations for a crumbling facade that resulted in debris falling onto the sidewalk over the weekend, according to city records.
DOB inspectors issued a violation to 333 E. 81st Street, located between First and Second avenues, on Monday for failing to maintain the building's facade. Pieces of the facade fell into the sidewalk the day before, prompting the fire department to respond to the building.
In addition to the violation, building owners were ordered to install a scaffold on the sidewalk for safety purposes, according to DOB records.

Monday's violation isn't the first time owners of the East 81st Street property have gotten in trouble with the Department of Buildings. The DOB issued a partial stop work order against the building in 2015 after discovering that units in the complex were being used as short-term rentals without a proper egress from the building.
Nobody was hurt by the falling debris on Sunday, city officials said.
