UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — Crime stats for the Upper East Side resumed their double-digit decline in September compared to last year, again vastly outpacing a decline seen citywide.

Crime complaints in the Upper East Side fell over 15 percent in September compared to the same month last year, police data shows.

Nearly every major crime plummeted by double digits in the silk-stocking district, including burglary (33.3 percent), grand larceny auto (29.4), robbery (15.8) and grand larceny (15.3).

That's a big change from August when, after months of dropping crime numbers, the numbers showed a small uptick of an almost 3 percent increase in reported major felonies than August 2022.

Petit larceny — or thefts under $1,000 — were down too by 27.3 percent. Other misdemeanors were lower than September last year as well, like housing crimes (28.6) and misdemeanor assault (5.6)

But not every major felony saw a big drop in September.

According to the crime data, there was one rape in the past 28 days, compared with none during the same time period last year.

And felony assault in September actually increased by nearly 19 percent, slightly higher than August's similar increase over 2022.

In July, typically a busy time for crime in the city, reported felony assaults were down by 25 percent.

Reported transit crimes were up, too, with three more incidents than last year.

Year-to-date, major crimes are still lower on the Upper East Side when compared to last year by 3.47 percent, outpacing the citywide decline of just over half-a-percent.

The continued decline in crime statistics could be a promising sign during a time when crime is still up compared to recent history.

Data shows major felonies are still up by almost 40 percent over two years ago, and by 39 percent compared to 13 years ago.

Despite the recent increases since the pandemic, reported crime is still lower for the Upper East Side when compared to the late Giuliani administration. In 2022, reported crime was down by almost 30 percent compared to 2001 levels, and 46 percent lower than 1998.
