UES Crossing Guard In Critical Condition After Struck By Taxi: NYPD

The 61-year-old NYPD crossing guard suffered extreme head trauma after being hit by a cab while on duty on East 96th Street, officials said.

UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — An on-duty NYPD school crossing guard is in critical condition after being struck by a taxi driver on an Upper East Side street Monday afternoon, police said.

The 61-year-old woman was working her shift helping people safely cross East 96th Street when a 50-year-old driver of a 2020 Toyota minivan yellow cab took a left onto the street from Lexington Avenue and slammed into her, officials said.

First responders rushed the victim to Mount Sinai Morningside in critical condition, officials said, adding that she suffered severe head trauma from the hit.

A police spokesperson said the victim was in the crosswalk when the cab driver hit her.

As of Tuesday morning, police officials said the crossing guard remains in critical condition.

The driver remained on the scene and the crash is being investigated by the NYPD Collision Investigation Squad.

Since mid-September, there have been at least seven pedestrians hit by cars on Upper East Side streets. The most recent crash on Oct. 26 also involved a driver making a turn and striking a pedestrian who was in the crosswalk.
