Former UWS Council Candidate Announces Run For Manhattan State Senate

Maria Danzilo, who came in second place in the Democratic City Council primary to Gale Brewer, will try her luck again in the State Senate.

UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — A candidate who ran against Gale Brewer in the Democratic City Council primary for the Upper West Side is returning for another shot at representing part of the neighborhood.

Danzilo won 15 percent of the City Council primary vote, to Brewer's 54 percent.

On Monday, Maria Danzilo announced she is running for State Senate against Brad Hoylman in the June 28th Democratic primary.

The district, which is currently the 27th but is expected to become the 30th after redistricting, covers the Upper West Side up to West 81st St., Hell's Kitchen, Midtown, Chelsea, the West Village and Greenwich Village.

Danzilo, who has been an Upper West Side resident for the past 40 years, ran her City Council platform on the improvement of street safety, crime reduction, pandemic recovery and helping local businesses.

She was also an active voice in the Upper West Sider for Safer Street group that was formed initially to push back against the temporary homeless shelter at The Lucerne hotel.
