The book tracks Zabar’s origins, and its many iterations and evolutions, successes and missteps, up to the present day. From Louis Zabar’s escape from a pogrom in Ukraine in 1921 that killed his father and sister and disfigured his mother, to his undocumented entry into the United States through Canada.

The story then travels to his entering the grocery business and laying the groundwork for the quality and prices that Zabar’s customers have come to expect over the years, to his untimely death in 1950, when the torch passed to his sons Saul and Stanley, and store partner Murray Klein.

The book also features archival photos of the family and the store, and each chapter ends with a reveal of a family recipe.
