Temperatures To Soar Into 90s In Nassau, 'Dangerous Weather Unless You Take Precautions': Blakeman

Three cooling centers are staying open into next week to handle the dangerous weather.

NASSAU COUNTY, NY — The forecast is for hot weather extending into next week across Long Island. Nassau County will open cooling centers for residents due to the anticipated extreme heat.

While the actual temperature is expected in the 90s, it could feel like its at least 100 degrees.

"That's dangerous weather unless you take precautions," County Executive Bruce Blakeman said. "The first thing is make sure you have plenty of water available."

Strenuous exercise should be avoided during the hottest time of the day, between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.Blakeman also reminds people to wear light and loose clothing, and wear sunscreen.

More urgently, Blakeman urges residents to never leave a child or a pet in a car and "check on the elderly in your community. Make sure they have what they need."

Cooling centers were activated starting on Friday at:

  • Cantiague Park in Hicksville (8 a.m.-6 p.m.)
  • Wantagh Park (8 a.m.-6 p.m.)
  • Mitchel Field in Uniondale (24 hours)

Blakeman said there were 155 heat-related emergency room visit in the county last year. "We want to reduce that number."
