2 Dead After Car Flies Off Henry Hudson Parkway In Wash Heights

A fatal accident took place Monday morning when a car lost control on the Henry Hudson Parkway and plunged onto the Amtrack tracks below.

WASHINGTON HEIGHTS, NY — Two people are dead after a car lost control Monday morning and went flying off a Washington Heights section of the Henry Hudson Parkway onto the Amtrack train tracks below, police told Patch.

The car exploded into flames upon impact, police added.

The fiery crash happened around 1:45 a.m near 180th Street, police said.

The 39-year-old driver was killed along with an unidentified passenger, NYPD said. ABC7 reported that the driver was ejected from the car and thrown onto the tracks, while the passenger was found in the car after the flames were put out.

Police told Patch that a preliminary investigation found that the car was driving southbound on the Henry Hudson Parkway, when it lost control, struck a median, and veered off the roadway onto the train tracks where it caught fire.

Amtrack Northeast tweeted around 6 a.m. Monday that trains were delayed "due to law enforcement personnel near the tracks."

The identity of the two people killed will be released after their families are properly notified.
