Celebrated Science Program For Uptown Students Taking Applications

UPPER MANHATTAN, NY — A celebrated science enrichment program specifically for Washington Heights and Inwood students has applications open through March 6.

The Lang Youth Medical Program at NewYork-Presbyterian is a six-year commitment to "inspire and prepare students to gain acceptance into college, explore careers in healthcare, and become future leaders who give back to their communities."

Throughout the program that goes from 7th to 12th grade, uptown students learn new skills through hands-on classroom-based and hospital-based experiences about anatomy, physiology, pathology, global health, community heath, and personal wellness.

The program also includes hospital tours, career panels, clinical rotations, summer internships, and high school and college preparation to guide students as they continue their journey through higher education.

Here are the eligibility requirements for applying to the Lang Youth Medical Program.

  1. Current sixth grade student
  2. Attending one of the Community School District 6 middle schools in Washington Heights or Inwood.
  3. Currently have an average of 80 percent or better in school grades.
  4. Demonstrate interest in exploring medical and science-related careers
  5. Be able to make a six-year commitment to the program, from 7th to 12th grades.

Participants meet for 17 Saturdays throughout the school year and the entire month of July.

    Many of the Lang graduates go on to attend top college and universities across the country, and more than half of its alumni choose to pursue degrees in healthcare or public health, reads a press release about the program.

    The program was first established in 2003.
