DYCKMAN, NY — Why did the chicken cross the road on Dyckman Street?
That was the question on Saturday when Evan Sachs unexpectedly stumbled upon a chicken on Dyckman Street near Inwood Hill Park.
Was it to get to the bodega? To take a walk in the park? To go and see the cloisters?

"First reaction was definitely amusement, but I felt a bit worried for her after I got closer," Sachs told Patch. "She looked like she was shivering either from being cold or being nervous or both."
According to a website dedicated to taking care of chickens, chickens are actually well-adapted" to survive even very cold winter weather" due to their feathers providing excellent insulation.

Sachs posted the picture of the chicken on a popular Upper Manhattan Facebook page that quickly garnered lots of reaction.
"I want to live in a world where chickens can cross roads without their motives coming into question," one person sarcastically commented in all capitals.
Another member of the Upper Manhattan page couldn't help but think about the possible meal, "Bruh that chicken is begging to be deep-fried."
The majority of commenters expressed worry about the chicken being so far out of its natural habitat, though, and discussed contacting organizations that could possibly rescue it.
Sachs called multiple animal rescue organizations after they got home, but none offered much help.
New York City Parks did end up coming to the rescue, though, as Urban Park Rangers saved not one, but six chickens on Dyckman Street outside of Inwood Hill Park on Saturday, the city agency told Patch.
The birds were all transported to the Animal Care Center of NYC.
It is not the first time an unexpected animal has appeared on Dyckman Street.
In April 2021, a tortoise named Crush strutted her stuff down Dyckman Street. The uptown tortoise is named after Crush from the movie "Finding Nemo."
