Detective Luis Maldonado was arrested Thursday morning in Upper Manhattan after a fight with his girlfriend, police said.

UPPER MANHATTAN, NY — A NYPD detective was arrested in Upper Manhattan Thursday morning after pulling out a gun during a fight with his girlfriend, a police spokesperson told Patch.
Detective Luis Maldonado, 41, was arrested about 6 a.m. within his home in the 34th Precinct — which covers Inwood and Washington Heights — and was charged with menacing and criminal mischief, police said.
During the fight, Maldonado also broke an iPhone and iPad, a spokesperson told police.

Police would not specify what Maldonado did with the gun — or say if he aimed it at his girlfriend — but instead pointed Patch to the "menacing" charge.
"A person is guilty of menacing in the second degree when ... he or she intentionally places or attempts to place another person in reasonable fear of physical injury, serious physical injury or death," reads a definition of the charge provided by the New York State Senate's website.

It was his girlfriend who called police, the NYPD said.
The Detectives' Endowment Association, one of several police unions, did not immediately respond to Patch's request for comment.
The specific location of Maldonado's arrest wasn't specified more than the 34th Precinct, which covers Manhattan north of West 179th Street.
Maldonado has worked within the Narcotics Borough Bronx unit since February 2020, according to the 50-a. He previously worked in the 48th Precinct in The Bronx.
