The state has broken its new positive COVID case count record three days in a row, with another 22,478 New Yorkers testing positive on Sunday — 12,404 of which who live in New York City.

The jump in COVID cases comes just before millions of people in New York City planned to travel for the holidays, which is creating an even bigger jump in people looking for tests.
Mayor Bill de Blasio announced Monday morning that eight new major testing sites would be opening across the city over the next two days and that free at-home testing kits will be sent out to "high volume" areas this week.

Between Dec. 11 and Dec. 17, 489 residents in Washington Heights and Inwood tested positive for the virus, according to the city. It is a positivity rate in Upper Manhattan of 5.9 percent.
