Dembow Music Festival Set For Wash Heights: Chimbala Headlining

WASHINGTON HEIGHTS, NY — A major music festival is coming to Washington Height's United Palace Theater in March.

Headlined by Dominican rapper Chimbala, the "Chimbala y El Movimiento" will gather world-famous artists at the Upper Manhattan venue between West 175th and 176th streets and Broadway to celebrate the dembow music genre.

Dembow has become increasingly popular in the Dominican Republic in recent years with its fast-hitting and repetitive rap sound.

Presented by MTW Live, the festival on March 26 will feature the following artists:

• Alex Sensation and Insuperable
• Aventura's Lenny & Max
• Bulova
• Chucky 73
• Dowba Montana
• Juhn
• Mozart La Para

There is also a set of surprise performers that will be announced closer to the concert date.

"Chimbala wants to open doors not just for himself, but for his colleagues and those coming up behind him, hence why the show is called’ Chimbala y El Movimiento’," concert organizer and founder of MTW, Diana Dotel, told Patch. "It brings me pride to bring Dominican acts to Washington Heights, a neighborhood where I was raised, and have turned the United Palace a right of passage for Latin acts to perform there and bring opportunities to help the escalation of the genre.”

The dembow festival in Washington Heights this month follows El Alfa's sold-out show in Madison Square Garden in October 2021. El Alfa is the genre's most well-known artist, and there are murmurings online that he might be one of the surprise performers.
