Driver Plunges 20 Feet To Death After Uptown Crash, Police Said

A vehicle heading the wrong way on West 155th Street crashed through a stone retaining wall and fell onto a roadway below, said police.

WASHINGTON HEIGHTS, NY — A woman died and a man was critically injured Sunday after crashing through a stone retaining wall in Washington Heights, police said.

A woman was driving the wrong way on West 155th Street between Broadway and Riverside Drive when she crashed her Toyota Camry into a parked car, police said. The collision caused the Toyota to hop a curb and slam into a stone wall, police said.

The car burst through the wall, falling 20 feet and landing on its roof within the grounds of the Trinity Church Cemetery, police said.

When emergency responders arrived on the scene they found that the car had erupted into flames, police said. EMS rushed the 37-year-old passenger to St. Luke's Hospital in critical but stable condition. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
