Elevator Crushes Man to Death in Washington Heights

A man was killed when an elevator he was loading quickly ascended and pinned him to the ceiling.

Update 7/25: Police have identified a 43-year-old man who was killed when an elevator he was loading quickly ascended and pinned him to the ceiling in Washington Heights.

Jose Fernandez, of Pinehurst Avenue, was loading merchandise into the elevator when it started to rise and pinned him to the first floor roof, police said. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

The incident happened on Saturday at 552 W. 182nd St. at about 5:45 p.m, according to police.
