GrowNYC Food Compost Drop-Off Site Returns To Inwood

The majority of food scrap drop-off sites have been closed in New York City since March, but a handful are returning on Saturday.

INWOOD, NY — Inwood residents with food compost bins are in luck, as a GrowNYC Greenmarket scrap drop-off site is returning to the neighborhood this weekend.

The drop-off site will be at Isham Street between Seaman Avenue and Cooper Street, and it will run from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.

The majority of food scrap drop-off sites have been closed in New York City since March 2020 due to budget cuts related to the coronavirus crisis, but four sites are reopening starting on Friday in Manhattan, and two in The Bronx.

The other Manhattan sites are on the Upper West Side, and in Stuy Town and Tompkins Square Park.

Over 60 compost food drop-off sites remain closed throughout the five boroughs.

GrowNYC provides a guide for what foods are compostable, and which are not:

  • Accepted Materials: fruit & vegetable scraps, non-greasy food scraps (rice, pasta, bread, grains, cereal), coffee grounds & filters, tea bags, eggshells & nuts, cut flowers & houseplants, soiled brown paper products, potting soil.
  • Do Not Bring: meat, fish, bones, dairy, fat, oil, greasy food scraps, animal waste, charcoal, coconuts, insect-infested plants, plastics, twist ties, rubber bands, or receipts.

Commercial food scraps are also not accepted at the drop-off sites.
