Inwood, Wash Heights Crime Up 10% Over Dec. '22: NYPD Data
December 2023 saw major crimes rise 10 percent on average compared to the same month last year in Inwood and Washington Heights.

INWOOD, NY - Crime is on the rise in Inwood and Washington Heights, according to new data released by the NYPD.
In the 33rd and 34th police precincts that comprise the Washington Heights and Inwood Manhattan neighborhoods, crooks are about 10 percent busier on average, according to NYPD statistics.

In New York City, major crimes increased 2.9 percent compared to the same month last year. However, in Washington Heights and Inwood, 192 major crimes reported this time last year rose to 213 in December 2023. In both neighborhoods on average, murders, misdemeanor assaults and petit larcenies dropped while rapes, grand larcenies, transit crimes and shootings increased.

In the 33rd precinct, which spans West 155th Street to West 179th Street, major crimes were up 5.97% in December, with robberies up 27.27% (14 reported in December), burglaries up 40% (seven reported in December), grand larcenies up 7.69% (28 reported in December). Three rapes and two shooting incidents were also reported, compared to none reported in Deecmber 2022. No murders were reported in the precinct during either time period.
In the 34th precinct, which spans West 179th Street to West 220th Street, major crimes were up 13.60% in December, with rapes up 100% (two reported in December), felony assaults up 36.36% (30 reported in December), grand larcenies up 37.21% (59 reported in December), transit crimes up 20% (three reported in December), misdemeanor assaults up 11.54% (29 reported in December) and other sex crimes up 250% (seven reported in December).

Murders decreased by 50 percent during the same time period in the precinct (one reported in December). Robberies (15.79%), burglaries (11.76%), shootings (20%) and petit larcenies (15.45%) also decreased compared to the same period last year.
Despite the recent increases since the pandemic, reported crime is still lower for Inwood and Washington Heights when compared to the late Giuliani administration. In 2022, reported crime was down by more than 22 percent compared to 2001 levels.
On the whole, the continued decline in crime statistics in New York City could be a promising sign during a time when crime is still up compared to recent history.
Data shows major felonies are still up by 32 percent over two years ago, and by 13.8 percent compared to 10 years ago.
