Man Attacks Wife With Screwdriver In Washington Heights: Police

The man stabbed his wife several times in a Washington Heights barber shop.

WASHINGTON HEIGHTS, NY — A man is facing charges for attacking his wife with a screwdriver in a Washington Heights barber shop, police said.

Jose Castillo, 66, entered a barber shop on West 141st Street and Broadway around 8:30 a.m. Thursday morning armed with a screwdriver, police said. The man approached his 38-year-old wife, who was sitting on a bench inside the business, and began to stab her multiple times with the sharp tool, police said.

The attack continued out onto the street after a barber shop employee intervened in the attack, police said. A passerby on the sidewalk stopped Castillo from continuing the attack after he knocked his wife onto the ground, police said.

Castillo fled the scene of the attack and was arrested later that day, police said. The man has been charged with attempted murder, assault and criminal possession of a weapon, police said.

The woman, who's identity was not released, survived the attack, police said. The police did not have information about her current condition.

Castillo is being held on $250,000 bail and is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday, according to court records.
