Man Killed In Washington Heights Shooting, Police Say

The man was shot early Thursday morning in front of a building on the corner of West 168th Street and Amsterdam Avenue.

WASHINGTON HEIGHTS, NY — A man was shot and killed early Thursday morning in front of a building on a Washington Heights street corner, police said.

A 27-year-old man was standing in front of 501 W. 168 St. near the corner of Amsterdam Avenue when he was shot once in the chest, police said. Medics rushed the man to Columbia University Medical Center where he was pronounced dead, said police.

The NYPD is investigating the man's death and has not yet revealed a suspect or motive.

Thursday's shooting is the latest homicide in a violent year for Upper Manhattan. Eight murders have been reported this year in the 33rd and 34th precincts, according to crime statistics as of Sept. 22. The precincts, which patrol the Washington Heights and Inwood neighborhoods, experienced just two murders combined in all of 2018, according to the NYPD data.
