No Wash Heights Or Inwood Public School Among The 480 Best In NYC

Not a single Washington Heights or Inwood public school cracked the top 480 of Niche's much-scrutinized rankings.

UPPER MANHATTAN, NY — There was not a single Washington Heights or Inwood public school ranked within the top 480 New York City schools in a much-scrutinized annual set of lists by the ranking website Niche.

The website Niche released on Tuesday its annual lists of the best public and private schools in America, based on metrics like test scores and academic performance, data from the U.S. Department of Education, as well as ratings from students, parents, and alumni.

Incredibly, it took until the 483rd spot for an Upper Manhattan public school to get mentioned in the list of New York City's best.

Yeshiva University's respective high schools for boys and girls — both of which are private — were the only two Upper Manhattan schools to earn a top 10 finish on Niche's ranking.

The Yeshiva University High School for Boys is the seventh best Jewish school in New York and the eighth best all-boys high school in New York, according to Niche. Its tuition is over $20,000 a year, Niche added.

Niche's new 2023 Best Schools and Districts rankings provide insight for parents on 92,743 public schools, 30,112 private schools, and 11,820 school districts nationwide, according to the website.

Elsewhere in the city, the Upper West Side's Trinity School was named New York's best private school, and the sixth-best in the U.S.

The nationwide top spot on the private-school list went to Phillips Academy in Andover, Mass. — its third straight year topping the list.

This year's best public school, meanwhile, is the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics in Durham, N.C., which led the list for the first time ever.
