NYC Releases Image In Honor Of Uptown's 'Little Dominican Republic'
The illustration features Upper Manhattan favorites such as the Little Red Lighthouse, United Palace Theatre, and Dominican restaurants.

UPPER MANHATTAN, NY — The city's office of Immigrant Affairs released an illustration recently in honor of "Little Dominican Republic in Washington Heights and Inwood."
The illustration is pat of the city's "Ethnic Enclaves" series aimed at highlighting 25 immigrant communities across New York City.
The illustration of "Little Dominican Republic," which features multiple recognizable spots in Upper Manhattan, was the first of its kind released to kick off the series.

Along with the Dominican flag and restaurants, there are a variety of Washington Heights and Inwood landmarks scattered within the illustration.

- Yeshiva University: 500 W. 185th St.
- Quisqueya Plaza: 224-238 Dyckman St.
- United Palace Theatre: 4140 Broadway
- Morris Jumel Mansion: 65 Jumel Terrace
- The Little Red Lighthouse in Fort Washington Park
- Highbridge Park
- George Washington Bridge
- Riverbank Park
The uptown illustration was done by Fanesha Fabre, a multi-media artist based out of Brooklyn.

For those who might not be familiar with the history of the "Little Dominican Republic" name in Upper Manhattan, it was officially given as the name in 2018 to the stretch from 145th to 220th streets.
While Patch isn't positive exactly when the "Little Dominican Republic" name was added to Google Maps, there are references and pictures of the new name appearing on the online map dating back to as early as November 2020.
“There is so much that we as Dominicans have to offer and be proud of," Rosita Romero, Executive Director of the Dominican Women's Development Center in 2018, told the Manhattan Times at the time of official name addition. "The name ‘Little DR’ is attractive to people of all ages and nationalities who want to immerse themselves in a unique cultural experience without having to leave the U.S.”
