Pair Of Major 9/11 Memorials Happening In Upper Manhattan

Here are the details for two large-scale 9/11 memorial events happening in Upper Manhattan on the 20th Anniversary of the attacks.

UPPER MANHATTAN, NY — The 20th Anniversary of 9/11 is on Saturday, and there are multiple events happening in Washington Heights and Inwood to pay respect to the lives lost on Sept. 11, 2001.

Here are the details and times of two major 9/11 related memorial events happening in Upper Manhattan that Patch knows about.

Fort Tryon Park Trust 20th Anniversary Memorial Gathering: Cloisters Lawn

From 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, the Fort Tryon Park Trust is putting on a 9/11 memorial event in conjunction with the FDNY, NoMAA, and NYPD as well as other community partners like Uptown Stories and local artists.

In addition to reflections on the events of 9/11, a collection of student poets are scheduled to do readings, and a local singer is slated to perform.

The event will take place at the Cloisters Lawn.


Good Shepard 9/11 20th Anniversary Commemoration: 4967 Broadway

Church of the Good Shepard in Inwood will host a collection of 9/11 memorial events on Saturday, both inside the church and in its outer gardens.

"As a parish, Good Shepard was impacted in a special way by 9/11, and so, as a parish, we will be commemorating the 20th Anniversary of that tragic day in a special way," the church wrote in a description of Saturday's events.

  • 4 p.m.: Dedication of the Helen Hayward Eternal Garden
  • 4:30 p.m.: Dedication of the Joseph Hamilton Garden
  • 5 p.m.: Mass in honor of those who died on 9/11 and those who mourn them
  • 6 p.m.: Unveiling of memorial stones in honor of Fr. Kevin Devine, NYD Jeff Healy, and FDNY Dennis Gilhooly, followed by the reading of the names of Inwood residents lost on 9/11 and reading of the names of first responders lost on 9/11.
