INWOOD, NY — Tannat Wine & Cheese, a popular eatery in Inwood, welcomed customers for its second to last time on Sunday, after announcing on Aug. 16 that it is permanently closing its doors. The bar will open for one final weekend in September as a "last hurrah," but is officially closed in all other respects.

Owners have not yet specified what weekend in September.

"Dear Tannatians, we are devastated to announce that we will be closing and our last night is Sunday, August 22nd," Tannat's owners wrote on its Facebook page. "We built Tannat with love. The last year and a half of pivots has been incredibly daunting but getting to know all of you made it a special time.

Upper Manhattanites and loyal customers of the Inwood eatery at 4736 Broadway took to the comment section to share fond farewells and happy memories of Tannat's food and wine.

"Devastating news…. Y’all will always be a part of Inwood. Thank you so much for all the good times over the years. Tannat will be missed," one person wrote in response to Tannat's closing announcement.

The name Tannat comes from a type of grape and is also a palindrome — meaning it is spelled the same backward as forward.

Tannat always offered farm-to-table food and worked exclusively with small Hudson Valley farms to make and offer menu options such as jam, pâté, pickles, mustard, smoked meat, fish, and cheeses.

The ownership team was made up of chef, author, and restaurateur William Emery and chef, physicist, artist, and ultramarathoner Sarah Goler.

"As we wrap things up Sarah will be starting on her winemaking career," read the Tannat closing announcement Facebook post. "This fall at RGNY on Long Island and next summer in the South of France at Domaine Des Enfants. Will is going to travel along and work on writing, food justice, and wine. The plan is to travel around the world for the next few years to learn as much as possible before starting our own vineyard and winery. It feels like a start of a new chapter of which we are sad and afraid but also excited."
