Uptown Dyckman Station Becomes Fully Accessible With Elevator Opening

DYCKMAN, NY — The opening of a new elevator at the Dyckman Street 1 train station this past week means the uptown station is now fully accessible.

The new elevator on the northbound side of the platform went into service on July 14, which connects riders to and from the street and platform.

"I commend the MTA for their unwavering commitment to improving services for riders in my district. The announcement of the new ADA elevator at Dyckman St along the line exemplifies progress and inclusivity,” State Senator Robert Jackson said in a news release. “By ensuring accessibility to the Bronx-bound platform and the entire station, they are creating a more connected and accommodating community."

The Dyckman stop was already ADA accessible to an extent as it was renovated with an elevator to the southbound platform in 2014.

However, it was stated at the time of the southbound elevator opening that due to the configuration of the landmarked uptown station, an elevator on the northbound side of the platform would not be feasible.

Nearly a decade later, though, the MTA was able to construct and open exactly that.

“Our aging and disabled population has steadily increased in the last few years, and it is important that they feel supported as members of our community," Council Member Carmen De La Rosa said in a news release. "Thank you to our advocates for people with disabilities whose work has made this project a reality for our community today. We look forward to continued equitable investment in our transportation infrastructure Uptown.”
