George Washington Bridge Is Going Cashless: What To Know

Uptown drivers beware. The Washington Heights bridge will be moving exclusively to cashless tolls on July 10.

WASHINGTON HEIGHTS, NY — The George Washington Bridge is going cashless.

The world-famous bridge connecting New Jersey to Washington Heights at West 179th Street is moving to exclusively cashless tolls starting on July 10.

For those who don't have E-ZPasses, the bridge's new system will capture images of license plates for payment by mail.

The tollbooths and islands on the bridge will be demolished, but there is no date set yet for the construction.

The change is part of the Port Authority's plan to upgrade bridge and tunnel crossings and eliminate some of the delays that come with crossing the George Washington Bridge.

The trend of major NYC tunnels and bridges going cashless is also a continuing one.

The Holland Tunnel went all electronic in December 2020 and the Lincoln Tunnel is expected to do the same by the end of 2022.

Elected officials have said that cashless tolling is needed in New Jersey and New York's quest to eventually implement congestion pricing.
