Wash Heights, Inwood Groups Join Citywide Anti-Noise Coalition

Two groups from Upper Manhattan took part in Tuesday's introductory press conference for the NYC United Against Noise coalition.

UPPER MANHATTAN, NY — Multiple anti-noise resident groups from Washington Heights and Inwood took part in a press conference Tuesday morning announcing the formation of a city-wide coalition called NYC United Against Noise.

The mission of the new coalition will be "to educate New Yorkers about the damaging effects of excessive noise to their physical and mental health, and to build partnerships with residents, community and non-profit groups, businesses, city officials and agencies to end dangerous excessive noise in our neighborhoods and on our streets."

The Upper Manhattan groups joining the coalition are the WaHi-Inwood Task Force on Noise and Moving Forward Unidos.

In particular, the first of those two groups has been an active force uptown over the past year, releasing a battle plan of 29 recommendations to help alleviate local noise issues and hosting an Upper Manhattan candidate forum about quality of life issues in the community.

The WaHi-Inwood Task Force on Noise was formed in the fall of 2020 by Washington Heights and Inwood community residents to bring in city agencies, elected officials, and other stakeholders to "discuss the problems and craft solutions."

The press conference on Tuesday to announce the new coalition was held at Union Square Park.

Here are the other groups joining the anti-noise coalition: Cedar Avenue Block Association (Bronx), The Chinatown Core Block Association (Manhattan), The Coalition United for Equitable Urban Policy (NYC), Orchard Street Block Association), Stop the Chop NY/NJ.

The coalition mentions illegal fireworks, cars, motorcycles, illegal ATVs, exceedingly loud music, house parties, unpermitted gatherings in city parks, and helicopters as the main contributors to excessive noise in New York City.
