Washington Heights, Inwood Keep Its School Superintendent

As school districts got new superintendents across the city on Monday, Upper Manhattan will keep its current leader.

UPPER MANHATTAN, NY — A citywide hiring blitz for superintendents won't change the leadership in Upper Manhattan, as the school district for Washington Heights and Inwood will keep its leader.

Monday's announcement comes after a months-long hiring process that included both new candidates and existing superintendents, who were asked to reapply for their jobs as Schools Chancellor David Banks plans to expand the responsibilities of the position for the next school year.

Manuel Ramirez will keep his job as the superintendent of Manhattan's District 6.

Ramirez has held the position since 2014, which covers 39 schools, according to the district's website.

"My team and I are committed to providing a high-quality education to all of our children," he writes on the website. "We believe in engaging the trifecta; Family, Student, and Community; to effectively and positively impact student’s academic achievement."

Ramirez was appointed District 6's superintendent after 10 years of teaching at a middle school in the Bronx.

The new and returning superintendents were chosen after several Town Hall meetings that were scheduled when families and officials found out their superintendents seemed to be ousted without community input.
