Harbor Seal Finds Fans Uptown, Report Says

The seal — affectionately referred to as "Sealy" — may have missed mating season, but has found love among Inwood parkgoers.

INWOOD, NY — A harbor seal has become a neighborhood favorite since being spotted on the pier of an Inwood park, according to reports.

The seal first appeared in the Muscota Marsh in early July and has re-visited the park's pier throughout the summer, NBC New York first reported. Inwood resident Ben Sadock told the news channel that the seal has popped up several times near the park's Gould-Remmer Boathouse — which is owned by Columbia University — near West 218th Street and Indian Road.

The locals have taken to calling the wayward pinniped "Sealy," Sadock told NBC News. It's likely "Sealy" ended up in New York City after failing to make it to New Hampshire for seal mating season.

"This seal didn't make it far enough north this summer, but it seems to be fine here, hopefully it will find other seals and find its way next year," Sadock told the news station.
